Distal radius reconstruction after Ewing’s sarcoma resection: An alternative of limb salvage procedure

Background: Distal radius reconstruction after tumor resection is challenging due to hand structure and function complexity. The procedure has a high cost, causes donor morbidity, or sacrifices the joint motion. Treatment for Ewing’s Sarcoma in the distal radius involves radiation, surgery, and chemotherapy. Treatment of Ewing’s Sarcoma post neoadjuvant chemotherapy of the distal radius involves en bloc excision and distal radius reconstruction using lateral mass polyaxial screw and rod.

Case: A 38-year-old woman has a chief complaint of a lump in her left wrist, which, two years prior to admission, is getting bigger. The core biopsy and pathological result show Ewing’s Sarcoma of the left distal radius. Then we treat the patient with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, en bloc excision on the tumor, and distal radius reconstruction with lateral mass polyaxial screw and rod.

Conclusion: We hope to share our treatment experience in using the novel technique of lateral mass polyaxial screw in distal radius reconstruction can preserve the joint motion.
